What is Blue Mage?

Blue Mage is a Limited Job that is categorized as a caster DPS that is very different from the other jobs in FFXIV. It learns its abilities from enemies rather than by leveling up. Due to its classification as a Limited Job it has some restrictions on playing with others, but it is because of this classification that it is so unique and interesting! Blue Mage is extremely flexible and as a result is capable of playing all three roles: Tank, Healer, and DPS.

What is a Limited Job?

Before we talk about how Blue Mage functions as a whole it’s important to understand what it means to be a Limited Job and what those restrictions entail. The current restrictions for a Limited Job are:

  • Maximum level of 80.
  • Unable to use Duty Finder matchmaking. Duty Finder can be used to enter duties, but it has to be with a preformed party.
  • Unable to enter certain types of duties, such as Eureka/Bozja, Squadron/Duty Support/Trust duties, Deep Dungeons, PvP, and Ultimate Raids.
  • Unable to progress the Main Scenario Questline.

These restrictions mean that Blue Mage gameplay is basically separate from the rest of the game and functions as its own game-within-the-game. While Blue Mage is restricted from doing the content mentioned above, it’s also free from some of the restrictive game design that applies to other jobs. Blue Mage has access to some wacky abilities like Level 5 Death which can instantly kill enemies, Diamondback which reduces all damage taken by 90%, and Final Sting which deals an incredible 2,000 potency.. but kills you instantly.

What content can Blue Mage do?

Blue Mage can participate in almost everything that wasn’t mentioned above! This means these are all on the table:

  • Dungeons
  • Trials (Normal and Extreme)
  • Raids (Normal and Savage)
  • Treasure Maps

There are some exceptions, such as Memoria Misera which we are completely blocked from entering, but most duties are open to Blue Mage!

Blue Mage also has its own set of solo duties tied to its job quest called the Masked Carnivale. For group content, there are achievements for completing synced content with a full party of Blue Mages! Nearly every Extreme trial and each final floor of a Savage raid tier has an associated achievement. Completing all Savage achievements for a given expansion rewards a title, and completing the Bahamut and Alexander raids rewards the Morbol Mount!

Lore

A so-called mage of rather questionable character claims to have mastered an outlandish form of spellcasting that resembles neither black nor white magic during his voyage to the New World. Allegedly, anyone who purchases one of his soul crystals can learn to mimic the aetherial magicks of wild creatures. But can he be trusted, or is he merely a con artist looking to make a quick gil?
