Learning Spells
Learning Spells
Blue Mages learn spells by defeating enemies who cast the spell theyβre trying to learn. Since most of our power actually comes from learning new spells, it’s important to understand how the mechanics for learning spells actually work!
Requirements for learning spells
- The enemy must cast the spell before it dies
- The enemy must actually die. If the enemy just disappears you will not learn
the spell (e.g. you cannot learn
Perpetual Ray from Onslaughter
in A8) - You are alive when the enemy dies
Things that affect learning rate
- Spell star rating (generally speaking, fewer stars = higher success rate)
- Level syncing (for dungeons/trials/raids, you are guaranteed to learn the spell when running synced)
Things that do not affect learning rate
- Number of times the enemy casts the spell
- Number of Blue Mages in the party
- Having non-Blue Mages in the party
- Party item level (minimum ilvl does nothing)
- Getting hit by the spell
- Silencing Echo
Special Cases
Spells for quests (Mind Blast, Glower) have a 100% learn rate regardless of level syncing status. Masked Carnivale has the unsynced learn rate for spells.
For a quick video detailing this process, click here. The video itself is quite old but the concepts are still the same.
Whalaqee Totems
Some spells cannot be learned from enemies at all and are instead obtained by trading Whalaqee Totems to Wayward Gaheel Ja in Ul’dah - Steps of Thal (x:13, y:13). Totems are awarded automatically for reaching certain milestones.

Force Field can also be learned consistently from Sephirot
(Extreme). When the level cap was 70 this was the only way for free trial
players to obtain it, since reaching 120 spells requires content beyond
level 70. This is no longer relevant now that the cap is 80. ↩︎
