Getting Started with Blue Mage

Blue Mage is an interesting job in that there isn’t really an obvious path to getting started on the job. Unlike other jobs, your progression is defined by spell acquisition rather than a linear leveling path. You’ll be exploring the world, joining duties strategically, and hunting down specific monsters to learn the abilities you need. Here’s the recommended order for tackling Blue Mage content:

  • Unlock Blue Mage

    • Start here if you haven’t picked up the job yet. It’s a simple quest that takes just a few minutes.

  • Reach Level Cap

    • Level to 80. You don’t need gear to level, but Tomestone of Poetics gear is cheap and makes everything faster.

  • Learn overworld (non-duty) spells

    • Wander around Eorzea and defeat overworld monsters. These are free spells that don’t require instances, so you can grab them anytime.

  • Pick up White Wind and Mighty Guard

    • These two totem spells are essential and available early.

  • Learn Aetheric Mimicry from Pharos Sirius (Hard)

    • This spell is a game-changer because it augments certain abilities depending on your active mimicry. You can do this solo unsynced since adds spawn continuously for free learning.

  • Start 4-player duty spells

    • Begin learning from dungeons either solo unsync or in a party. This is a good time to start job quests and attempt Masked Carnivale stages you’re ready for.

  • Progress to 8-player duties

    • Join raids in a party to learn from bosses. Starting with older expansions (A Realm Reborn) makes progression smoother. Work toward finishing Masked Carnivale and learning Angel Whisper, which makes the process smoother still.

Important Tips

At each step, complete your job quests when available. Spells required by job quests have a guaranteed learn rate even when run unsynced, so you won’t get stuck. Gear doesn’t matter much - focus on spell collection. Tomestone of Poetics gear is affordable and sufficient for just about everything.
